This tool can be used as a piston stop with heads on or off the motor.Works great to find true TDC. It can also be used with a degree wheel.Everything was either found in my garage or at a hardware store. This was a fun and easy project. It also save me some money as I didn't have to buy it commercialy.
I'm not an engineer,so the pictures will explain better then I can. I used a hammer and punch to knock out all the ceramic insulation from an old spark plug I got from a s/b Ford. I took a 3/8"-16nc tap and ran it completely through the center of the plug . I then found a 2 1/2" long allen head stud(allen head michine bolt will work) to fit through the plug .The 3/8" nut is to be used as a lock so there is no movement in the stud after finding the depth needed. This set up alone will work to check TDC or just a piston stop with heads on the motor.
You will need the set up I just explained, plus a plate to check with heads off the motor. You need boiler plate or flat stock that doesn't flex under pressure. I used 3/8" boiler plate and it worked great for me.The picture should explain the rest.
Another nice thing about this tool is it can all be put together and stored as one piece.Any questions,e-mail me at "stockton@ntcnet.com".........P.Stockton
Adjustable Push Rod Checker and hydraulic lifter to solid lifter
Picture should explain how to make this tool.Make sure you cut closer to the bottom of the rod so the nuts fit between the head and lifter. To make the hydraulic to a solid lifter, just mig weld the cap to the main body of the lifter. I have used all these tools in two build ups and everything worked great. Any questions send e-mail to( stockton@ntcnet.com
